Who do we rely on for meaningful change and does design have a part to play?
Vibes for April 2021
Is the wellbeing of our planet in the hands of the independent businesses that drive change, or the governments that seal its future? Our societal challenges are multi-faceted, and it would be foolish to depend on one saviour/source to fix all our problems.
Big challenges demand a shared responsibility between private companies, governments and communities. At Driftime, we’ve been discussing methods that give back control to communities - for the people by the people. Looking through a digital design lens, creating interfaces, systems and methods that lead to informed decision making, action and long-term impact. Businesses and governments which put community and the environment ahead of profit will no doubt experience failures before seeing impact and success. Now more than ever we need a few brave leaders to test drive alternatives. The Better Business Act is one such cause that brings together forward thinking brands in adopting legal responsibility in how we conduct business.
Internally, we are incorporating doughnut economics into our business model, developing and designing around an iterative process that compounds our improvements, and builds up to achievements for both our clients and Driftime. It’s future-proofing - a process of reframing our daily praxis into a long term visionary venture. Observationally, we are seeing businesses and entrepreneurs increasingly action doughnut economics in their structures - it’s an agile and accommodating approach, with the ambition to build a resilient brand, or city, or country that benefits people and planet.
