Short on time? Here’s the Nutshell…
November has been both trying and transitional. Not only are we steering through a second UK lockdown, we are also navigating the consequences of a groundbreaking President elect. It's got us thinking: what does this mean for conscious travel and lifestyle? We highlight the gift of giving through The Tide, cascading through Atmos Mag, the sound of glaciers, volcanoes and the Roland 808/303. Brand love for Dusit Central Park, raising the bar with Paula Akpan and Black queer travellers, 2020’s friendship report and the business of culture – phew!
What's new in the world of Driftime®…?
👆 The High
Marking the end of a troubling November and the beginning of a new month, our friends at only.one are reflecting on Giving Tuesday to encourage the timeless gift of giving. Our continued work with this initiative has inspired a commitment to ocean conservation in the form of Tide memberships, an active step forward in environmental progress and the shaping of our shared future. We hope to use tech and design to give and let live, gradually replacing our love affair with material goods with something a little more thoughtful. #allhandsondeck
👇 The Low
Déjà vu, anybody? A return to a nation-wide lockdown brings with it a whole host of familiar issues. We are particularly missing our in-person professional communities and day-to-day social interactions. It's feeling a little like groundhog day with the ever-pressing restrictions policing our daily movements. All for a good cause, of course, but tough on our collective wellbeing nonetheless.

At least and at most... Atmos brings us unparalleled visual and written content that spans the globe.
With a generous and thoughtful catalogue of work, Atmos Volume 04 "Cascade" explores the notion that "every action, including inaction, is a choice". Our decisions are rooted in their consequences, but our options aren't always clear cut. Browse online for free full-length articles on the forgotten Black cowboys and cowgirls, who are estimated to have made up one third of the horsemanship community, words from Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and Nick Tilsen on a wave of environmental change, and Maggie Rogers on the glacial pace. It's a tale as old as time; our attitudes change and shift like the weather, but our duty to protect the environment remains the same.
Immersive, expansive, and vibrant — the Earthworks UK debut is in Brighton.
Earthworks is a moving image installation by artist collective Semiconductor, an illustrious demonstration of the phenomena of landscape formation. Using scientific and technological devices, soundscapes and animated colours are recorded as seismic waves, a kind of dreamy synaesthesia where the "sound makes the image and the image makes the sound". Get an insight into the worldly thought behind it from the artists themselves. Groundbreaking work, quite literally.
808 and 303 — a free studio resource for the novice musician and maestro alike.
Experimenting with Roland and Yuri brings more than just a feast for your ears, it's a sight for your eyes, too. A Guy Called Gerald takes us through the ins and outs of the original 808 drum machine and 303 bass synthesizer. Described as a free online groovebox, 808303.studio has been released as part of The Design Museum's online learning experience through a visually and sonically accessible digital music box. Record and share your masterpieces on all platforms and read a little more from Creative Boom.
Dusit Central Park — collaboration in practice.
Combining Thailand’s most prominent hospitality and leisure brands, this enlightening business dialogue and structure demonstrates a space designed for its visitors and residents. Pentagram scripted, audio directed, and created a 3D-rendered animated video, touring the space speculatively with a 2026 end date in mind. With a type face created with both Latin and Thai character sets, Dusit Central Park is a timely ode to bilingual voices, history, and heritage.
Paula Akpan is establishing a priceless digital resource for Black queer travellers.
Travelling as a marginalised person brings with it a plethora of dangers, risks, and threats, something that the largely whitewashed travel industry all too often forgets. During the pandemic, founder Paula spent four months speaking to over 20 Black queer activists and community organisers around the world whilst working with a team of developers to create an exciting web app. Watch (and help fund) this space to see crucial travel content for, and by the community.
The Friendship Report 2020 - Snapchat looks into how we maintain friendships, cultivate relationships, and stay connected during COVID-19.
These past months have seen changes in our relationships. In the words of Kelci Harris, psychology professor and friendship researcher; "social interactions are now much more intentional" in light of the pandemic. Globally we prioritise honesty, trustworthiness, and loyalty in the people we surround ourselves with, with over half of Snapchatters saying that they are significantly more likely to feel closer to their friends now than before COVID-19. After all, chaos breeds community — perhaps we are edging closer to a more cohesive society.
